The students of English Education Department have many subjects to study. One of them is Academic Writing which divides into two parts, in the fifth semester and sixth semester. The assignment of Academic Writing I is in the format of portfolio. It consists of some essays related to English Education Department. Many students appreciate this kind of assignment. Here, I would like to give some opinions about assignment of portfolio during Academic Writing I.

 

Firstly, portfolio is an effective way to collect the assignment. In portfolio of Academic Writing I, there are some essays as the assignment of this subject. The students will be more careful to keep and save their works because if one of the essays is lost, they have to make the new one as the substitution. It means that they will have much responsibility on their works. I think it is the effective way of giving the assignments.

 

Secondly, by doing the portfolio the students will improve their mastery of vocabulary. In the essays which the students made, they found many new vocabularies. They can learn more about the vocabulary related to English Education Department through their portfolio. By doing this continuously, it will be a good habitual for them to get many new vocabularies every time. Especially for their future when they become the teachers, it will be very useful.

 

 Thirdly, portfolio of Academic Writing I consists of some essays which build the students’ knowledge about English Education Department. Many students who do not know or only know the little things about it become more and they get many experiences in writing. It can lead them to write the thesis better and easily in the next semester when they take the thesis course. Portfolio is the first step to make the great thesis in the next. Starting from now and the future follows.

 

In conclusion, assignment of portfolio during Academic Writing I is useful for the students of English Education Department. It is not only useful for them now but also for the next, in the future. Especially in making thesis as the requirement to get Bachelor Degree of Education in English Education Department, portfolio will be very useful. The advantages and disadvantages of offline learning material to support academic writing class

 

The development of technology changes everything, including the education sector. Many students change their thinking in finding the learning material to support their academic writing class. Many students use online material but not few of them use the traditional one, offline material. They have their own belief about how to find their learning material. The others say that online learning material is simpler but the others side say that offline one is more accurate. Because of this controversial, I would like explain about the advantages and disadvantages of using offline material to support academic writing class.

 

The advantages of using offline material are: firstly, the material which the students need is more complete. In offline learning material, the material is discussed in the detail information and the important aspects are explained clearly. Secondly, the information in offline material is valid. There is no doubt that offline material covers the valid information because the writer and publisher are clear and they have the full responsibility about it. Thirdly, the offline learning material is more durable. It is in the form of printout or hard copy so that the students can see it every time they want. They do not need the media to open this learning material.

 

The disadvantages of using offline learning material are: firstly, it takes a long time to find out the information. The information in this learning material is inside of the book, so the students have to open the book one by one. It needs much time and the students must focus on the material they need in detail. Secondly, the price of offline learning material is expensive. It happens because the textbook or the printout form is published by the publisher. Here, the publisher must pay the writer and also the tax which make the price expensive. Thirdly, offline learning material is not effective for the students. If the students need the learning material, they have to find out the book in the library or book shop. However, the books in the library are sometimes not complete and it is difficult to find the learning material which is appropriate to the students to support academic writing class.

 

In conclusion, by using offline learning material the students can get the complete, valid and durable learning material to support their academic writing class. In other hand, the students also need a long time, spend much money, and difficult to find the learning material. There are advantages and disadvantages of using offline material to support their academic writing class.
